Supporting kit

Tools, safety kit & secure storage

Destroying drives is only part of the job. You also have to get them out of laptops, servers and caddies, keep them secure until they're dealt with, and protect the people doing the work. The ICO expects drives awaiting destruction to be stored securely and logged.

Questions about tools, safety & storage

Why do I need safety gear?

Some hard drives use glass platters, which shatter when punched or crushed. Cut-resistant gloves and eye protection are a sensible minimum.

What should I record when collecting drives?

At minimum: serial number, where it came from, the bag or case it's stored in, and who has it. The ICO recommends keeping a log of all devices awaiting destruction and their location.
