Wipe before you destroy

Standalone hard drive erasers

A standalone eraser wipes drives without a computer: slot the drive in, choose a mode, and walk away. Wiping is the step guidance puts first. It protects the data even if the drive is later destroyed, and it lets you reuse or resell drives that still have value.

What to look for in a drive eraser

  • Secure Erase / Enhanced Secure Erase. These use the drive's own firmware command and are the quickest way to a NIST "purge" on supported drives. Overwrite-only modes (single or multi-pass) are a "clear".
  • Logging. A printer port or log output gives you evidence for each drive: model, serial number, method and result.
  • Bays and speed. Multi-bay units erase several drives at once, which matters for ITAD volumes.
  • Interfaces. SAS support is essential for server drives. For M.2 and NVMe, see SSD & flash erasers.

Questions about hard drive erasers

Is a DoD 3-pass or 7-pass overwrite better than Secure Erase?

Not necessarily. Multi-pass overwriting dates from older drive technology. NIST's current guidance classes overwriting as "clear", while the drive's own sanitise or secure erase command can achieve "purge". For SSDs, overwriting is unreliable.

Can I wipe drives that are failing?

Drives with bad sectors or failed electronics may not wipe completely. Erasers will usually report the failure. Those drives should be physically destroyed instead.
