Physical destruction

Hard drive & SSD shredders

Shredding cuts a drive into fragments too small to read data from. With a fine enough cut it works on SSDs and flash media as well as spinning hard drives, and it leaves visible proof that a drive is gone.

Dedicated drive shredders are industrial machines, and most are sold through specialist dealers rather than Amazon. Here's what's listed on Amazon UK, and what to check whichever route you buy through.

HSM

Powerline HDS 150 Hard Drive Shredder

Best for In-house electric shredding of hard drives

A floor-standing industrial shredder from German maker HSM that cuts hard drives into 40mm strips. The listing says it also takes CDs, floppy disks, cards and USB memory sticks.

E-2 means electronic media is only divided, so SSD chips can survive. Check HSM's own spec sheet for size, weight and power before ordering.

  • 40mm strip cut
  • Security levels H-3 / E-2 / T-1 stated on the listing
  • Also takes optical media, cards and USB sticks (per listing)
  • HSM part number 1772111

What to check before buying a shredder

  • Security level. Look for the DIN 66399 / ISO/IEC 21964 rating. The H-level covers hard drives and the E-level covers SSDs and flash. A coarse cut that's fine for hard drives can leave SSD chips intact. See how the levels work.
  • Particle size. For higher-risk data, the UK NCSC's guidance describes destroying media to particles of 6mm or less.
  • Media it accepts. Check the feed opening against 3.5" desktop drives, 2.5" laptop drives, M.2 sticks, phones and tapes, whichever you need.
  • Throughput and duty cycle. How many drives an hour, and how long it can run before it needs to cool down.
  • Power, noise and size. Larger units may need a three-phase supply, a dedicated space and a pallet delivery.
  • Evidence. If you destroy drives for clients, look for serial-number logging, camera recording or certificate support.

Wipe first. NIST's 2025 guidance prefers a verified purge (wipe), with destruction on top for drives that can't be wiped or mustn't leave your control. A drive eraser costs far less than a shredder and handles the first step.

Questions about hdd & ssd shredders

Can a hard drive shredder destroy SSDs?

Only if its cutting size is small enough. SSD memory chips are tiny, so a shredder sized for hard drives can leave chips intact. Look for a stated E-level (electronic media) rating under DIN 66399 / ISO/IEC 21964.

Why are there so few drive shredders on Amazon?

Hard drive shredders are heavy industrial machines, often needing delivery by pallet, installation and servicing, so most are sold through specialist dealers. Amazon UK's results for "hard drive shredder" are mostly paper shredders, so check the listing says it's built for hard drives.

Is shredding better than punching?

For security, yes: shredding destroys the whole platter or chip, while a punch damages part of it. Punching is far cheaper, though, and pairing a verified wipe with a punch is a common, proportionate approach for lower-risk drives.
