Solid-state storage

SSD, M.2 & flash media erasers

Solid-state storage keeps data in memory chips, not on magnetic platters. That changes the rules: degaussers have no effect, hard drive punches can miss the chips, and ordinary overwriting can't reach every block. The reliable software route is the drive's own sanitise or cryptographic erase command, which these standalone units can run without a PC.

Why SSDs need different treatment

  • Degaussing doesn't work. NIST warns that degaussing an SSD "can complete successfully, but no sensitive data is sanitized".
  • Overwriting is unreliable. Wear levelling and spare memory mean an overwrite can't reach every cell that once held data.
  • Use the right command. Look for Secure Erase, NVMe Sanitize or Cryptographic Erase support on the eraser.
  • Destroying SSDs. If you need physical destruction too, every memory chip must be broken. That means a shredder with a fine E-level cut, not a hard drive punch.

Questions about ssd, m.2 & flash erasers

Can I degauss an SSD?

No. SSDs, USB sticks and SD cards store data electrically in flash memory, which magnetic fields don't erase.

What about phones and tablets?

Modern phones encrypt storage by default. The NCSC notes that a manufacturer's factory reset on an encrypted device normally deletes the encryption keys, making the data unreadable.

Is drilling a hole through an SSD enough?

Only if it goes through every memory chip, and a single hole usually misses most of them. Wipe first, and shred if you need physical destruction.
